Coppell Wins Texas Boys' Division I Title

In just their first season at the Division I level in Texas, midfielder Tyler Landis and the Coppell boys' lacrosse team certainly wasted no time in making their presence felt.

Following an impressive semifinal round victory over top-seed St. Mark's on Saturday, Coppell edged Dallas Jesuit 10-8, to capture the Texas High School Lacrosse League Division I Boys' Lacrosse Championship on Sunday at Woodforest Bank Stadium. Landis, a Brown recruit, was named the title game MVP thanks to four goals in the pinnacle contest, including three tallies in the opening stanza.

The victory also marked Coppell's third-straight state title. The Cowboys had won back-to-back championships at the Division II level before making the switch to Div. I this season.

But Coppell has six varsity lacrosse players – seniors Nate Hruby, Sam Johnston, Tyler Landis and Brandon Mullins, and juniors Matt Ainsworth and Ethan Evans – who are key to this year's football team, the most successful in school history.

Finishing the regular season undefeated for the first time, Coppell (10-0) hosts Plano at 1 p.m. Saturday in the bi-district round of the Class 5A Division I playoffs.

"That whole group right there, they are funny, they've got great personalities, and they are really a big part of our core," coach Joe McBride said. "It's just a tight-knit group."

That group has been playing together since fourth and fifth grade, in both youth football and lacrosse leagues.
